Summer Professional Development with Artist Class Visit Option 

The Rockwell Museum is proud to partner with Local Learning Network (a national network for folk art in education) and The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes to offer Culture, Community & the Classroom, an active and culturally engaging workshop for teachers and artists in the Finger Lakes region.

Free for New York Teachers, Traditional Artists, and Museum Educators to participate starting July 2022. See below for more detailed program information.

Teachers earn CTLE credits and learn how culture and traditional arts can be assets in their classroom as they build inclusive learning plans with a cohort model that centers on teachers’ expertise. Applicable in any K-12 subject area, the workshop brings traditional artists and educators together for active and engaging training on incorporating diverse cultural perspectives and knowledge into your classrooms and pedagogy.

Folk Artists will build their portfolios and gain methods for teaching about art forms and their context to diverse students of all ages.

Community – Folk and traditional arts are found in every community. The study of traditional arts and their creators contribute not only to students’ understanding of culture and community, but also to their ability to think critically, gather and analyze evidence, and express their ideas and interpretations through personal creativity.

There are three phases to the Culture, Community & the Classroom program, and The Rockwell is excited to host Phase 3 on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at the Museum. More information about the cumulative celebration will be shared closer to the event.

Phase 1: Workshop | Learn

July 11 – 12, 2022 | 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. | Bush Campus, 459 Philo Road, Elmira, NY

All educators are welcome to register and participate in the July workshop until space is filled. Additionally, 8 educators will have the opportunity to host an artist for 2 visits to your school in the fall of 2022 at no cost to you (indicate your interest when you sign up). Artists participating in the integrated residency represent locals traditions of the region.

Phase 2: Residencies | Practice

To be scheduled between folk artists and teachers with grade-level classrooms in the fall, at the beginning of the 2022 – 2023 school year.

Phase 3: Celebrate | Share

November 19, 2022 | The Rockwell Museum, 111 Cedar Street, Corning, NY

All are invited to a celebratory community event on November 19, 2022, at The Rockwell Museum. The event is free and open to all educators in the region. Attendees will have an opportunity to gain insight into the process of working with artists to integrate cultural knowledge and art traditions into grade-level curriculum.
