Color, Shape & Texture Student Exhibition

The Rockwell Museum welcomed Art Option and Adaptive Art students for a new student exhibition program in collaboration with Corning-Painted Post High School art teachers Sharron Holland and Megan Wukovitz and Middle School art teacher Maria Goldwyn. During their visit to the Museum, students learned about different art and objects made by diverse American artists.

Color, Shape & Texture Student Exhibition is on view December 3, 2022 – February 5, 2023 at KIDS ROCKWELL Art Lab.

Students viewed landscapes, abstract paintings, sculptural works and historic Native American art. They explored various art styles and mediums while learning about different cultural traditions. They experienced the collection through interactive sensory exploration using sight, sound and touch.

Students took inspiration from The Rockwell’s collection back to their classrooms to create mixed media, process-based pieces. Under the direction of the art teachers, students worked both independently and collaboratively to create their artwork. This project was focused on creative thinking and developing fine motor skills of students with unique needs.

Collection Inspiration:

• Megan Wukovitz’s students created quilt squares inspired by Marie Watt, Blanket Stories: Western Door, Salt Sacks and Three Sisters. Students also created collages with painted papers based on Water-Line by Richard Parrish and a group mixed-media box project inspired by Steven and William Ladd, Cowboys and Indians box sculpture. 
• Sharron Holland’s students created layered paintings inspired by Melanie Yazzie, Carry It Forward. Students learned about color, textures and shapes. They used a crayon rubbing process and cut animal and flower-shaped stencils for the layers. Students also created clay works connected to their paintings.
• Maria Goldwyn’s students focused on texture through painting and weaving by experimenting with materials and tools. They created tactile woven sculptures and mosaics inspired by loaned Please Touch! The Art of Michael Naranjo.

The Rockwell is excited to collaborate with the Corning-Painted Post Area School District on this new initiative and display artwork to celebrate the talent and creativity of students in the district’s Art Options and Adaptive Art classes.

This special exhibition was created with support from Corning-Painted Post School District’s Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA).
