50 years ago, as of June 22, 2022, Hurricane Agnes stalled over the Northeastern United States and forever altered the physical and collective social landscape of the Elmira/Corning region of New York. How did this natural disaster act as a catalyst for change in Corning? What imprints of the flood do we still see on our town today? Brian Frey, award-winning filmmaker of WSKG and writer and producer of the 2012 film Agnes: The Flood of ’72, and the 2019 film Main Street Rising, joins Rob Cassetti, longtime area resident and retired Senior Director of Creative Strategy and Visitor Engagement at the Corning Museum of Glass, for a moderated conversation on the impact of the flood specifically on Market Street and the current-day home of The Rockwell Museum. This hour-long presentation will be moderated by Rockwell staff, features clips of Frey’s film, and includes an opportunity for audience Q&A.
About the Speakers
Brian Frey is the Director of Operations and Special Projects for WSKG Public Media in New York’s Southern Tier and Finger Lakes Region. Mr. Frey is also an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker with over 25 films to his credit. Several of his films have aired nationally on PBS. Along with his film about the 1972 flood, Brian has produced documentaries about early aviator Glenn Curtiss, which won the New York State Emmy Award for best documentary in 2005, and films titled; Harvest, Main Street Rising, Watkins Glen: The Street Years and Cornell: Birth of the American University. He is currently working on a film about the underground railroad in upstate New York. He has a degree in filmmaking from Plattsburgh University and lives in Binghamton with his wife and two children.
Rob Cassetti is the retired Senior Director of Creative Strategy and Visitor Engagement at the Corning Museum of Glass. He joined The Corning Museum of Glass in 1999 as manager of education and creative services and was named senior director in 2007. In 2005, Cassetti was asked to explore the next phase of expansion for the Museum—this time to better accommodate guests and the Museum’s expanding collection of contemporary glass. The new Contemporary Art + Design Wing of the Museum, based on his master plan, opened in 2015. Cassetti holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Fine Arts. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, Architectural Record, and Architecture. He has spoken widely on museum planning and glass technology, including broadcast appearances on Discovery, National Public Radio, Martha Stewart, The History Channel, and PBS. Prior to joining the Museum, Rob worked as a glass designer with Steuben Glass and consulted with Steuben to help lead the planning and execution of the company’s 100th anniversary. Today, Rob serves as President of the Board of Trustees of The Museum Association of New York, and a member of the Corning Incorporated architectural advisory committee.
