5:15 p.m. | Opening remarks
Join us as we celebrate the opening of a new student exhibition for the Alley Art Project with Teaching Mural Artist Sarah C. Rutherford. This student reception will unveil the 2023 mural design and celebrate the collaboration between The Rockwell Museum, the Corning-Painted Post Area School District High School Learning Center (HSLC) and SUNY Corning Community College (CCC).
Utilizing photography, collage, and acrylic painting, students created self-portraits inspired by Martine Gutierrez’s self-portrait and Indigenous Woman, 2018 arts publication in The Rockwell’s collection. They incorporated mixed-media iconography into their visual narratives that represent their unique identities portraying themselves as heroes. Students explored ideas of who a hero can be and how heroes show up in their lives, in the community and in the world. Elements from the individual student works are incorporated into the mural design.
Student exhibition will be on view May 10–September 10, 2023.
