Sunday, April 29, 2018 | 12:30 – 1:15 p.m.
This is a presentation of Bare Bones Café, a community-sourced museum experience included with regular Rockwell admission. Refreshments will be available. Full schedule
Join dancers Sue Weibel and Jamie VanNess for an intimate and casual performance of Raks sharqui, more commonly known as “belly dance” in the United States. Bare Bones Café is transformed into a Middle Eastern-inspired street performance with pillows and textiles for a cozy visitor experience. After the performance, Sue and Jamie will answer questions and give easy, introductory lessons in getting started in belly dance. All ages are welcome.
About the Artists
- Sue Weibel has been belly dancing for 14 years and started performing/choreographing in 2006. She was a member of a premiere belly dance troupe in Rochester, New York. She has trained with many world-renowned instructors and has traveled to Egypt to complete courses in Egyptian folkloric dance. Sue’s primary dance style is classical Egyptian belly dance. However, you will see influences from several other dances in her performances as she loves dancing in general. Sue says, “There is something about music that makes me need to move and dance. It is like I feel music rather than hear it.”
- Jamie VanNess is born and raised in the Southern Tier. Her passion for belly dance began many years ago when she saw her first belly dance performance. That passion grew when she took classes and experienced first-hand the empowering and healing benefits of this beautiful cultural dance. She became a certified instructor through Dolphina’s GoddessLife program and has taught classes in the local area to help bring these life-improving benefits to others.
