What You’ll See and Do
Bare Bones Cafe
Giant tube looms, poetry readings, interactive modern dance collaborations, acoustic jam sessions and more – there’s something new and surprising each day of Bare Bones Café, April 27 – May 12, 2018.
At the heart of this pop-up gallery is a challenge – how can an artist present their vision with only bare bones staging? The Rockwell provides the space and limited equipment – the artist brings the space to life. Giant tube looms, poetry readings, modern dance collaborations, live music and more make this year’s Bare Bones Café an event series you cannot miss. On May 5, you’ll see:
- 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. | Experimental Translation: Sight vs Sound with Amelia Harnas
- 11 a.m.- Noon | Taking Turns: Painters, Dancers and a Musician
- 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. | Landscapes of Memory with Laura Sanz
- 2 – 3 p.m. | The Feminist Air Horn LIVE with Card Carrying Books & Gifts
- 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. | Singing the Story of Organic Folk with Rapid River Boys
Antigravity: a space for contemporary perspectives
Through the Thread by Crystal Gregory
The Rockwell introduces an inaugural new exhibition series: Antigravity! Each year, the museum will commission one emerging artist to create a site-specific installation for The Rockwell’s rotunda entryway. The 2018 inaugural installation features the work of sculptor and fiber artist Crystal Gregory. Gregory uses woven lace structures as the foundation of her work, paying particular attention to negative space and light. She experiments by pairing materials not often found together in her work such as hand-woven fabrics and molten pewter or lace and concrete.
150th Anniversary of Glassmaking in Corning
The Rockwell joins our sister institution, Corning Museum of Glass, in celebrating the 150th anniversary of glassmaking in Corning. This installation features the work of Frederick Carder, lead designer for Steuben Glass Works from 1903 -1932.
Family Activities
Open every day, The Rockwell Museum welcomes the young and the young-at-heart to explore art. Art Hunts, I-Spy and touch stations make a visit to The Rockwell a must for art explorers of all ages. The Rockwell is designed to make art accessible to kids, and inspire an appreciation for art at a young age.
