    You must register EVERY PERSON in your group – children and adults! To keep people safe and socially distanced, we have a set capacity of 30 participants total allowed in the Art Lab during a project session. All children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver, and therefore all adults must register too.

     

    Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday steeped in tradition that honors friends and family members through art, dance and festive foodsDecorate sugar skulls, make paper flowers and learn about this special Mexican holiday. This year’s event will be held in-person; sign up for a time slot to ensure safe social distancing for families as we persevere through the pandemic together.

    • Oaxacan ofrenda presentation and interactive building activity with Leonel Rosario, Dolores Alvarado and Bev Stevens.
      • Presentations will begin at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Southwest Lodge (Floor 2).
      • There will be a limited capacity for the presentation to keep families safe and socially distanced. First come, first served. Tickets will be available upon arrival the day of the event to secure seats for your preferred program time.
    • Add a paper butterfly with a special message to the kaleidoscope of butterflies in The Rockwell’s Student Gallery.
    • Explore the Museum galleries on an Art Hunt. Find details in works of art on view inspired by Dia de los Muertos.
    • Receive a $5 coupon to shop for traditional Day of the Dead items in the Museum Store.

    • Decorate your own sugar skulls and make your own paper flowers with Dinorah J. Peters, Gloria Harris and CareFirst. Please register every person in your group for the Art Lab space – youth and adults. Choose from 1-hour project time slots from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Workshop registration includes event admission.
    • Take a festive photo using Dia de los Muertos themed props at the Selfie Station. Walk the red carpet and share your photos with #RockwellMuseum.

    Did You Know?

    Throughout the month of October, middle school Spanish students from the surrounding area visit the Museum to participate in a Dia de los Muertos tour. The tour program focuses on works of art connected to themes of loss and remembrance. In addition, Rockwell educators and volunteers provide outreach programming to Grade 3 classrooms connected to the study of Mexico unit. As part of the school tour visits and outreach programs, students create projects inspired by Mexican folk art traditions.

    Southeast Steuben County Library invites you to a free screening of Disney’s Coco, October 16 at 4:15 p.m. Witness the story of an aspiring young musician Miguel, confronted with his family’s ancestral ban on music, who enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer. 2017. Rated PG. 1h45m.

    You must pick up your free tickets at the Library between now and 2 p.m. on October 16. First come, first serve.
