When The Rockwell Museum was established in November of 1976, our founders intended The Rockwell to be a vibrant and dynamic institution. Not only has our collection grown over the past four decades, but our mission has evolved as well.
Today, November 8, we celebrate Founders’ Day — the birthday of our founding collector, Bob Rockwell. Bob and Hertha Rockwell’s desire to make the collection accessible to as many people as possible remains a guiding principle of the Museum.
What You’ll See & Do
Audubon in the Exotic West: the North American Quadrupeds
September 21, 2018 – January 6, 2019
Best known for his groundbreaking work in The Birds of America series, the noted artist and naturalist John James Audubon (1785-1851) traveled up the Missouri River to undertake a second, equally ambitious project – creating a definitive study of the mammals of North America.
The Rockwell Collection
The Rockwell Museum tells the story of the American experience through fine art. Housed within the Old City Hall building of Corning, this diverse collection includes a mix of nineteenth-century American paintings, historic bronzes, and Indian artifacts as well as twentieth-century modernists, illustration art, contemporary photography and historic firearms. Featured galleries represent the works of the Taos Society of Artists, masterworks of Remington and Russell, Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) art and material culture, works by contemporary native artists and more.
Through the Thread by Crystal Gregory
March 2, 2018 – February 17, 2019
The Rockwell introduces an inaugural new exhibition series: Antigravity! Each year, the museum will commission one emerging artist to create a site-specific installation for The Rockwell’s rotunda entryway. The 2018 inaugural installation will feature the work of sculptor and fiber artist Crystal Gregory. Gregory uses woven lace structures as the foundation of her work, paying particular attention to negative space and light. She experiments by pairing materials not often found together in her work such as hand-woven fabrics and molten pewter or lace and concrete.
NEW! KIDS ROCKWELL Art Lab
Your Rockwell admission ticket now grants you access to the KIDS ROCKWELL Art Lab, a new interactive family studio, located just around the corner from the Museum at 36 E. Market Street in Corning. Young art explorers will love getting creative with hands-on projects; families will love the opportunity for exciting and authentic playtime in a relaxed, drop-in environment. Activity stations at the Art Lab are all inspired by the artwork and architecture of The Rockwell, with the goal of making art accessible to kids and inspiring an appreciation for art at a young age.
