In the latter part of the 19th century before the creation of a state park, James Hope was the resident artist at the gorge at Watkins Glen, maintaining an art studio and selling any of his works there. Hope helped name many of the sections of the Glen, and his son, James D. Hope, photographed the Glen and maintained a gift shop with their art work well into the 20th century. Join The Rockwell and Watkins Glen expert, Tony Ingraham, for a guided hike of the gorge at Watkins Glen State Park. We’ll explore the Glen with the Hope heritage in mind, and seek to understand the extraordinary natural heritage as we walk beneath the crags and behind the waterfalls of Watkins Glen.
Participants must be prepared to hike a minimum of 2 miles up the gorge trail stairs. Hiking shoes or sneakers are highly recommended. All vehicles entering the park will be required to pay an $8 parking fee. The hike will start promptly at 10 a.m. at the main entrance of Watkins Glen State Park. Parking can be accessed off of Route 14 in the Village of Watkins Glen.
There are three separate entrances to Watkins Glen State Park. Participants should enter at the main entrance located directly on Route 14 in the Village of Watkins Glen. The hike will meet at the entrance to the gorge trail at the end of the parking lot.
About the Speaker
For 24 years, Tony was in charge of environmental education for the Finger Lakes Region of New York State Parks, including Watkins Glen, Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls, Cayuga Lake, Fillmore Glen, Fair Haven Beach, and many other state parks in central New York State.
Tony worked for Ithaca Boat Tours for ten years on the MV Haendel as a first mate and interpretive guide since their first season in 2003. You may have seen their boat at the end of the dock at the Ithaca Farmers Market.
Since Tony’s retirement from the state parks in 2003, he formed Owl Gorge Productions, and, with the outstanding editing skills of his wife, Liz Bauman, published A Walk through Watkins Glen: Water’s Sculpture in Stone, and Ithaca: the City, Gorges, and Colleges, co-authored with Liz. A Walk through Watkins Glen won a first place award in the Media Competition of the National Association for Interpretation in 2009.
