The Rockwell believes in advancing the desire of our founding collectors, Bob and Hertha Rockwell, to make the art collection accessible to as many people as possible. We build community through partnerships and collaboration. That’s why we’re pleased to once again partner with the the Alzheimer’s Association, Rochester & Finger Lakes Region to present Meet Me at The Museum, a unique program designed specifically for persons with dementia and their care partners.

It is an opportunity for engagement and fellowship for people living with a memory loss condition. The tour focuses on igniting conversation, eliciting memories and providing a warm and welcoming environment. The visit includes viewing and discussing artwork in the galleries.  The tours are held on the second Monday of each month from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.  and alternate between The Rockwell Museum and the Corning Museum of Glass.

“Art can be a catalyst for memory triggers and nostalgic thought. Participants begin in The Rockwell galleries viewing art with our specially trained guides. This special connection between The Rockwell Museum and the Alzheimer’s Association offers people with Alzheimer’s a sense of connection and identity through the arts using the rich collection of American art.” -Mary Mix, Senior Museum Educator at The Rockwell.

New to the tour experience this January, The Rockwell will invite local musician, Jennifer Johnson, to lead the group in a music-making program. Using The Rockwell’s collection as inspiration, Jennifer will explore the universal joy of music in many cultural traditions and celebrations. The session will conclude with refreshments and conversation.

Meet Me at the Museum is based on a program offered at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City called Meet Me at MOMA. The MOMA program was found to provide not only an opportunity to socialize, but also to provide intellectual stimulation, shared experiences with loved ones, an accepting environment for activity, and positive changes in mood for participants both during and in the days after the tours. The Alzheimer’s Association, Rochester & Finger Lakes Region, offers a similar program in partnership with the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester.
