Popular music tries to reach as broad an audience as possible by idealizing the world most of us recognize and inhabit. It usually tells us that what we believe is worthy. As a result, it has opened a revealing and entertaining window on American attitudes for the last 150 years.
In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Michael Lasser, Cindy Miller, and Alan Jones will present “We Are Coming, Father Abram:” Abraham Lincoln and the Songs of the Civil War.
Both Confederate and Union armies sang in their encampments and on the march, and the people at home soon picked up the same songs. The two armies serenaded each other across the lines at night and then slaughtered one another in the morning. Through a combination of lecture and concert format, we will learn about the types of songs that were popular during the War, focusing on abolition, patriotic anthems, and how songs of the war years portrayed President Lincoln.
