This month, The Rockwell is pleased to once again partner with the Corning Community College Theater Department for this performance of Affectionately, written/performed by Lee Charlier. She will be accompanied by Steven Mathew.
After the performance, stop by the Museum Store for a preview of the Twin Tiers Mini Maker Faire – a FREE event held Saturday, April 27 from 10-3 at Corning Community College main campus. Step into Albert Bierstadt’s Mt Whitney or pose in front of your favorite museum with the help of our green screen technology! Plus, try your hand at 3-D drawing.
Affectionately is a series of journal entries that capture why a couple decided to travel west. The actors become the characters voices and embody the journey and struggle these characters went through. The performance is inspired by N.C. Wyeth’s illustration, “If the woman in the wagon…”
N.C. Wyeth, If the woman in the wagon was scared to death at the sight of the prairie I surely had cause to be afraid; but I was not. I was uplifted., 1921. Oil on canvas.
“As soon as I saw the painting I instantly was drawn to the eyes of the women. I saw what I interpreted as hope and pain. I was moved to create characters that had a voice through the actors instead of the actors taking on the role of the character.” – Lee Charlier
Lee Charlier is in her final semester of Corning Community College and plans to continue her career in theater education. She will be directing an upcoming community theater production this summer at CCC.
“The opportunity to interpret our collection from the very different perspective of theater provides new insights into even the most familiar artworks. We’re 
fortunate to be able to truly bring our collection to life through this partnership with the CCC theater program.” – Kate Swanson, Interpretation and Public Engagement Educator, on partnering with CCC
