Popular songs of the west portray a place that begins as wilderness, but eventually becomes a setting for people to carve out farms and build towns. By the turn of the century, a popular song meant a “love song” ‒ songs about the west were about young couples who left their parents back East to build their own happy home in an idealized West, from Oklahoma! to Annie Get Your Gun.
Through a combination lecture and concert format, Michael Lasser, Cindy Miller, and Alan Jones, will present songs that tell the story of how people pushed west, shaping their own American experience.
About the Performers
Michael Lasser is a lecturer, writer, broadcaster, critic, and teacher. Since 1980, he has been the host of the nationally syndicated public radio show, Fascinatin’ Rhythm. For 20 years, Lasser was the theater critic for The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle and then for five years for CITY Newspaper, and a member of the Speaker’s Bureau of the New York Council for the Humanities. Cindy Miller is a talented vocalist that performs everywhere from intimate clubs to stadiums. She performs with the Gap Mangione Big Band, and has appeared with the Benny Goodman Tribute Band, the Utica Symphony Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Central New York Jazz Ensemble. Alan Jones is a singer and piano player extraordinaire. He and his long-time musical partner, Phyl Contestable, have been guest artists with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Brockport Symphony. They have been the opening act for Bill Cosby, Rich Little, and Jackie Mason.
