How did a detective, a journalist, and a painter from Homer, NY, help to inscribe Abraham Lincoln’s place in the nation’s iconic imagery? David P. Quinlan and Martin A. Sweeney (dressed in 19th-centure attire) provide the answer.
This engaging presentation explores the significant contributions made to the life and iconography of President Abraham Lincoln by three native sons from “the heart of New York State” – Homer, NY.
Mr. Sweeney’s book, Lincoln’s Gift from Homer, New York: A Painter, an Editor, and a Detective (McFarland & Company, 2011), tells the story of Francis B. Carpenter, William Stoddard, and Eli DeVoe. Quinlan and Sweeney will make the Bare Bones Cafe come alive with accounts and images of Carpenter’s artistry and Central New York’s connections to our Civil War President. The community of Homer presently holds 23 of Carpenter’s portraits – the most recent acquisition, Carpenter’s portrait of his fiancée Augusta Prentiss, rendered in 1851, will be exhibited during the presentation.
Artists, art historians, art students and anyone interested in regional history will discover why a small town in New York State has become a choice destination for Lincoln historians and why the community hopes to install six pieces in bronze to commemorate its “gift” to the “Great Emancipator.”
