Lecture Description
This talk will examine the ways a deep and intentional focus on collections objects can help museums tell more expansive stories of American history while also revealing the multiplicity of American experiences. Using the exhibition This Land: American Engagement with the Natural World, Powell will describe the process of curating the Hood Museum’s first exhibition to feature Native American art—both historical and contemporary—alongside its broader American art collection. How might this approach be applied within The Rockwell and other museum collections? How might this help us ask difficult questions and engage in meaningful dialogue about what constitutes “American” art?
About Jami Powell
Jami Powell, Hood Museum
Jami Powell is the Hood’s first curator of Indigenous art and serves as a lecturer in the Native American and Indigenous Studies Department at Dartmouth. Jami is a citizen of the Osage Nation and has a PhD in anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Since taking her position at the Hood Museum, Jami has curated several exhibitions highlighting Indigenous art including Form and Relation: Contemporary Native American Ceramics, CIPX Dartmouth with Kali Spitzer and Will Wilson, Inuit Art | Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and This Land: American Engagement with the Natural World. Jami has published articles in Museum Anthropology, Panorama, Museum Management and Curatorship, and is an editorial advisor for First American Art Magazine. Jami is on the Board of Directors for the Native American Art Studies Association and has served on curatorial advisory boards for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Yale University Art Gallery, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. She is a recipient of the 2020 New Leadership Award from ArtTable, the foremost professional organization dedicated to advancing the leadership of women in the visual arts.
