Sarah Newman, PhD, James Dicke Curator of Contemporary Art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum
Presented in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition, Kara Walker’s Pictorial History of the Civil War, Sarah Newman, PhD, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, takes a focused look at Kara Walker’s series of prints on the Civil War. This exhibition will be on loan to us from the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This program will be a preview of the upcoming installation of the series at The Rockwell Museum – join us to learn more about the artist, or to learn more about the exhibition if you won’t be able to join us in Corning this summer.
About Sarah Newman, PhD
Sarah Newman is the James Dicke Curator of Contemporary Art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Her research interests include the relationship between contemporary art and design, and the art of the 1980s. Newman is the curator of the exhibition “Tiffany Chung: Vietnam, Past Is Prologue,” which opened at the museum on March 15, 2019, and is currently overseeing a reinstallation of the museum’s permanent collection galleries for contemporary art. She organized the exhibitions “Do Ho Suh: Almost Home” (2018) and “Kara Walker: Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated)” (2017). Newman served as the guest curator for “Theaster Gates: The Minor Arts,” which opened March 5, 2017, at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. She has taught at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, George Mason University and Georgetown University. Newman earned a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley.
