Public Exhibit Opening: A Place for All People, Historic Poster Exhibit

This year’s Museum Day Live! marks the Grand Opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The Rockwell joins in support of this momentous occasion by displaying a traveling exhibit, A Place for All People, a historic poster exhibit that explores African American history, culture, and community.
The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the 19th museum of the Smithsonian Institution and is located at the foot of the Washington Monument on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The museum provides for the collection, study, and establishment of programs and exhibitions related to African American life, history, art, and culture. It is a place where people can learn about the richness and diversity of the African American experience; it is a place of meaning, memory, reflection, laughter, and hope.
The African American story is one characterized by pain and glory, power and civility, enslavement and freedom. A Place for All People evokes the power of oration and freedom stories, the brilliance of artistic achievement, and the soaring heights of cultural expression, philosophy, sports, and politics. The poster exhibit is a survey of the African American community’s powerful, deep and lasting contributions to the American story.

The Rockwell Museum will open its doors free of charge on Saturday, September 24, 2016, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 12th Annual Museum Day Live! On this day only, participating museums across the United States emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based facilities, which offer free admission every day, and open their doors for free to those who download a Museum Day Live! ticket. Inclusive by design, the event represents both The Rockwell’s and The Smithsonian’s commitment to make learning and the spread of knowledge accessible to everyone.
The Museum Day Live! ticket is available for download at Smithsonian.com/museumday. Visitors who present the Museum Day Live! ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues on September 24, 2016. One ticket per household is permitted.
