Frederic Remington

Born in Canton, New York, Frederic Remington grew up in upstate New York, in Ogdensburg. Deciding to become an artist, he attended Yale University and after went to New York Art Students League in 1886. Remington’s first western illustration commission was from Harper’s Weekly. Remington submitted works to Harper’s through the 1880’s into the 1890’s, during which time he settled in New Rochelle, New York. The Bronco Buster was Remington’s first bronze sculptural piece, a challenging subject due to its composition; however, more than two hundred were cast. He often produced sculptures that encompassed “the most perfect expression of action.” By 1907, he had produced many other sculptures, including The Rattlesnake and The Outlaw. Remington was a war correspondent and illustrator and died of acute appendicitis in 1909 at the age of 48.
