Summer Activities in the F.E.S.

Family visitors to The Rockwell will find all new activities this month in the Family Exploration Studio, inspired by the beautiful contemporary Navajo loom now on view in the family galleries.

The Navajo, the largest Native American tribe,  are well-known for their beautiful woven rugs and blankets. They initially learned to weave from the Pueblo people, using wool after the Spanish brought churro sheep to the Southwest. This important craft is passed down from one generation to the next, allowing the Navajo people to express to their deep connection to the natural and spiritual worlds they cherish.

To honor the tradition, visitors can now design weavings of their own creation!

At the light table, a kid favorite, design and color your own Navajo rug using transparencies to trace a variety of patterns and symbols, using your imagination for a one-of-a-kind creation! Bold geometric patterns make these rugs unique and fun for kids!

Crafters of all ages will love the “Learn to Weave” station. Use simple materials like cardboard, yarn, and strips of fabric to learn the basics of weaving and walk away with a colorful creation of your own!
